WOMEN ARTISANS TO BE PROMOTED IN GEMS AND JEWELLERY TRADE

Joint Meeting of the Executive Committees of Jewellers Association Jaipur and Jaipur Jewellery Show Held

Jaipur, 26 July: A joint meeting of the Executive Committees of the Jaipur Jewellery Show (JJS) and the Jewellers Association Jaipur was held to discuss the current scenario of the Jaipur Gems and Jewellery industry. During this meeting, several proposals were unanimously passed. These included efforts to make the traditional mastery of Jaipur’s jewellery industry more competitive, making the industry employment-oriented, encouraging women artisans, providing better training to artisans, and creating a platform for young and new artisans.

In his welcome address, JJS Chairman, Vimal Chand Surana stated that it is the need of the hour for both organisations to come together to find solutions to the challenges faced by the Gem industry. He also highlighted the golden opportunity for jewellery artisans to find employment. JJS Secretary, Rajiv Jain further mentioned that Jaipur has been famous worldwide for decades as the Emerald (Panna) capital. Now, the time has come to make special efforts for Ruby (Manik). Keeping this in mind, the theme for this year’s JJS is also Ruby, he informed.

The President of the Jewellers Association, Alok Sonkia said that the entire world is aware of the skills of Jaipur’s artisans in gem cutting. However, this art also requires technical support. For this, it is necessary to bring the developed techniques, research, and studies from other countries here. Nirmal Bardia stated that despite the changes and recession in the world market, there are tremendous opportunities in the Indian domestic market. Only Jaipur’s Gems and Jewellery industry can fulfill this demand. For this, manufacturing infrastructure development is essential. Dinesh Khatoria said that due to the increasing trends towards Emeralds, there should be more transparency and certification of treatment to protect the interests of customers. Vijay Kedia emphasised the need for more training for artisans in the walled city area of Jaipur.

Secretary of Jewellers Association, Neeraj Lunawat proposed to present a long-term plan for artisan training, better wages, secure future, calling it more attractive for jewellery artisans than other industries. Kamal Kothari mentioned that due to recent branding in a big wedding, the popularity of Emerald has significantly increased. Ajay Kala from JJS emphasised the need for joint efforts to end the dependence on Bangkok for Ruby (Manik) treatment. He also mentioned the necessity for various labs to use a uniform language in their documentation.
