JANE AUSTEN’S ENDURING RELEVANCE DISCUSSED IN TODAY’S WORLD

Jaipur, 28 December: In a thoughtful literary panel held at Jaipur’s Ashok Club today, 250 years of the iconic author Jane Austen were marked. The session entitled ‘Jane Austen at 250: Reflecting on Her Enduring Legacy’ explored her enduring relevance and sharp social insight. The session featured Prof. Sudha Rai as Lead Speaker and Moderator, alongside Prof. Anshoo Sharma, Prof. Narendra Kumar and Prof. Preethi Agrawal, who offered varied perspectives on Austen’s literary legacy across cultures and generations. The discussion was organised by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation under its Sahyog initiative.

At ‘Jane Austen at 250’, the panel reflected on Austen as a writer rooted in reason and rationality, whose narratives drew deeply from the everyday realities of women’s lives. The discussion highlighted how Austen herself never lived a life of privilege, a truth that shaped her portrayal of young, vulnerable protagonists — characters often regarded as reflections of her own inner world.

Panelists examined how Austen’s family and personal experiences served as her primary references, lending authenticity and emotional depth to her fiction. The conversation also explored the remarkable global reach of her work, with translations across numerous languages ensuring her continued relevance. The panel also addressed why Jane Austen still matters today — her sharp social observation, moral clarity and nuanced understanding of women’s agency making her voice as resonant now as it was 250 years ago.

The panel further explored how Jane Austen’s novels have been adapted for the screen, spanning celebrated international film interpretations as well as influences seen in Bollywood storytelling. Short clips from notable adaptations were screened during the session, with references to classics such as ‘Pride and Prejudice’, illustrating the continued cinematic life of her work.

Session concluded with a Q&A round with the audience. Earlier, the welcome address was given by Tusharika Singh and the session concluded with a vote of thanks by Ajay Singha.
