
Jaipur : The sixth edition of the Machhli and Vanya Prani Mitra Awards was held today at ITC Rajputana in Jaipur. The annual awards, presented by the Prabha Khaitan Foundation (PKF) and WWF-India, recognise individuals whose extraordinary efforts contribute significantly to wildlife protection and conflict management.
The Machhli Award was awarded to the Udaipur Wildlife Rescue Team (Mr. Sitaram Meena, Mr. Ajit Singh Ranawat, Mr. Jitendra Singh, Mr. Dwaraka Prasad Sharma, and Mr. Ashok Narayan Joshi), for successfully rescuing and safely relocating a large number of animals. Forest Guard from Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve of Bundi, Ms. Saroj Kanwar has served as a vital interface engaging with local communities and addressing Human Wildlife Conflict. Forest Guard of Shergarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Ms. Anita Kumari successfully rescued more than 450 wild animals. Technician/Tree guardian, Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary, Mr. Ramlal Gurjar has been monitoring high-risk areas, leading to a significant reduction in poaching and illegal forestry.
The Machhli Award carries a total prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh, which was split evenly between the four winners for their outstanding contribution. Each winner also received a certificate of appreciation.
The Vanya Prani Mitra Award, which recognises exceptional management of human-wildlife conflict, was shared by Lecturer & Conservationist of Udaipur, Mr. Darshan Kumar Menaria who together with other locals transformed Menar into a globally-recognised “Bird Village” by leading community efforts to stop harmful practices. Hanumangarh Territorial Forest Divison, Anil Kumar Bishnoi dedicated over 35 years to wildlife, personally rescuing more than 10,000 wild animals. Wildlife Protector, Mr Peera Ram Dhayal, operates a rapid-response system to mitigate human-wildlife conflict, intervening in high-risk situations to prevent mob violence and retaliatory killing.
The Vanya Prani Mitra Award carries a total prize of Rs. 1.5 lakh, which was split evenly between the three winners. Each winner also received a certificate of appreciation.
All the awardees were selected by a distinguished jury, comprising of IFS (Retd.) Mr. Rahul Bhatnagar; Former Member of State Wildlife Board, Mr. Rajpal Singh; and Director of Wildlife & Habitat Programme, WWF-India, Mr. Yash Shethia.
On the occasion, IFS Pavan Kumar Upadhyay said that they live with challenges every moment. He noted that institutions like the Prabha Khaitan Foundation and WWF-India provide a platform to appreciate and encourage the efforts of frontline staff. He also highlighted the inclusion of exclusive wildlife projects in this year’s state budget and added that the state government is continuously working to promote the livelihoods of people living around forest areas and ensure their inclusion.
Senior Director, Biodiversity Conversation, WWF-India, Dr Dipankar Ghosh said that These awards honour the champions who play an exemplary role for the conservation of wildlife within the state of Rajasthan. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Prabha Khaitan Foundation for their partnership in these awards. This recognition will inspire the field staff of the Rajasthan Forest Department and local community members to continue their crucial work in protecting and conserving the state’s wildlife and habitats.
Earlier, National Advisor of PKF, Ms. Vinnie Kakkar underscored Prabha Khaitan Foundation’s commitment to preserving India’s rich cultural and natural heritage, highlighting its collaborative efforts with the Government of India to honour individuals and groups dedicated to wildlife conservation and fostering harmony between humans and nature.
Honorary convenor Rajasthan & Central India PKF, Ms. Apra Kuchhal highlighted the enduring work of the Prabha Khaitan Foundation and Ehsaas Women. She further emphasised how the foundation’s initiatives have consistently empowered women and strengthened India’s literary and cultural landscape over the years.
