DISCUSSION ON POETRY COLLECTION ‘WHEN GODS DON’T MATTER’ HELD IN AJMER

A discussion on the poetry collection ‘When Gods Don’t Matter’ by Jaipur-based publicist and poet, Jagdeep Singh, was held at Pratap Mahal in Ajmer. The author was in conversation with Professor Malati Mathur, where the discussion delved into poetry as a deeply therapeutic and cathartic form of expression. Singh emphasised that while poetry allows emotional release, it must also be grounded in craft, noting that poems should be tightly structured and maintain a fundamental rhythm. The discussion was held under the aegis of The Write Circle, an initiative of the Prabha Khaitan Foundation. The event was organised in association with Ehsaas Women of Ajmer and We Care, with Pratap Mahal as the hospitality partner. The General Manager of Pratap Mahal, Devendra Ratnawat, presented the mementos to both the author and the moderator. Earlier, the evening opened with a welcome note by Swati Vashishtha.
A key highlight of the session was the focus on poems from the collection inspired by the works of iconic literary figures such as Sylvia Plath and T. S. Eliot. Singh elaborated on how engaging with their writings shaped his own poetic voice and thematic explorations. The author as well as the moderator also did a poetry reading of the poems.
The session brought together literature enthusiasts, students, and distinguished guests for an engaging exchange on contemporary poetry and its evolving dimensions. It is to be noted, 16 students from Singh’s alma mater, Mayo College attended the discussion, contributing to an interactive and intellectually stimulating atmosphere. His former English teacher at Mayo College, Suresh Mathur was also present. The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session where the audience actively participated.
