DISCUSSION HELD ON POETRY COLLECTION ‘WHEN GODS DON’T MATTER’

A discussion on the poetry collection ‘When Gods Don’t Matter’ by Jaipur-based publicist and poet Jagdeep Singh was held on Saturday, 14 March at Jai Club. The session was held under aegis of WOW ‘World of Words’. The session featured the author in conversation with WOW Member, Ankita Somani Jain, where he shared insights into his journey as a poet and the themes explored in the book.

During the discussion, Singh spoke about contemporary poetry as a form that allows complete creative freedom, enabling poets to write about love, life, society and personal experiences without constraints. The conversation also touched upon his writing process, his preference for personal and confessional poetry, and the courage it takes to express intimate emotions through verse. He also shared valuable tips for young poets, encouraging them to read widely, remain honest in their expression and write fearlessly about their own experiences.

The interaction further explored the diverse subjects in his poetry, including love, the vicissitudes of life, and reflections on the art of writing. Singh also explained his unique approach of dedicating poems to renowned writers and thinkers such as T. S. Eliot, W. B. Yeats, Sylvia Plath, James Joyce, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Jean‑Paul Sartre.

Published by Hawakal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, this anthology is a collection of 50 free-verse poems written over a period of four years. The verses capture the deeply personal and universal experiences of life — from the anguish of the Covid times to unrequited love, nostalgia, insomnia and the sheer absurdities of everyday existence. The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session where the audience actively participated. The session was moderated by Aashima Choudhary.
