From ‘Vaastav’ to Villages, Nitu Joshi’s Journey is a story of purpose and transformation.
Mumbai: For over two decades, Nitu Joshi was known in media and entertainment circles for her work across films and television. Today, however, the producer-turned-social worker is drawing attention for a different reason her growing grassroots initiatives in Maharashtra’s tribal and rural regions through MIAM Charitable Trust, an organization she founded in 2022.
In recent years, Joshi has focused much of her energy on social causes ranging from environmental conservation and education to women’s empowerment and animal welfare. One of the trust’s most ambitious initiatives has been a large-scale plantation drive in Gadchiroli, where nearly five lakh trees have been planted with the involvement of local communities. The effort is aimed at ecological restoration while simultaneously generating awareness about sustainable development and environmental responsibility. Her work in tribal areas extends far beyond plantation drives. Through MIAM Charitable Trust, women from Adivasi communities have been trained in practical skills such as tailoring, knitting, food processing, pickle-making, cooking and plantation-related activities, helping many move toward self-employment and financial independence.
Education has emerged as another major pillar of her work. The trust has distributed books and educational material, promoted reading initiatives through free libraries and supported children from farming and economically weaker families. According to those associated with the project, more than 35 students have gone on to secure government jobs after receiving educational guidance and support through these initiatives.
Joshi is also actively involved in animal welfare programmes, particularly the care and rehabilitation of stray dogs and cats, while the trust continues to support orphaned children, rural communities and environmental awareness campaigns across Maharashtra. Long before entering social work full-time, Nitu Joshi built a substantial career in the entertainment industry. She has more than 20 years of experience in film, television and media production and has been associated with several notable projects. She served as Executive Producer of the Sanjay Dutt-starrer “Vaastav” and produced “Yaksh” featuring Nitish Bharadwaj.
Her television portfolio includes projects such as Zee TV’s “Pet Apna Maal Paraya” and Sahara TV’s “Apnapan” starring veteran actor Kiran Kumar. Over the years, she has been associated with the production and management of more than 40,000 minutes of television content across multiple channels, including Zee TV, Sahara TV, ETV and CVO.
Joshi has also produced the documentary “Dharmraobaba Atram – Dilon Ka Raja,” highlighting the life and public service journey of Maharashtra leader Dharmraobaba Atram. Her contributions in both entertainment and social service have earned her significant recognition. She has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for her contribution to films and television and has received several accolades for her social initiatives.
Most recently, Nitu Joshi was honoured with the prestigious Rashtriya Harit Gaurav Puraskar at a national event held in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The award ceremony was organized by Kalpataru Sanstha under the leadership of Vishnu Lamba. The award was presented to her by Jaipur Collector Sandesh Naik, in the presence of Padma Shri Jagdish Parekh and renowned environmentalist Padma Shri Sundaram Verma. The honour recognized her outstanding contribution to environmental conservation, plantation drives and rural social development.
Reflecting on her journey, Nitu Joshi says:

Whatever I have achieved has been possible because of people who trusted and supported me. If society continues to support these efforts, I want to do even more meaningful work in the years ahead.”
From film sets and television studios to villages, schools and tribal communities, Nitu Joshi’s journey represents a rare transformation one where professional success has evolved into a mission dedicated to creating lasting social impact. Today, through MIAM Charitable Trust, she is not only changing lives on the ground but also demonstrating how experience, determination and compassion can come together to build a meaningful legacy beyond the world of entertainment.
